BANYAN SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES VINES VERSION 4.10
New Toolkit Release Enables Fast, Easy
Deployment of VINES-Integrated Applications
MONTREAL, April 8, 1991 -- Banyan Systems of Westboro, Mass., today
introduced a new release of the BanyanR VINESR distributed network
operating system. This release, VINES Version 4.10 and an associated
Applications Toolkit sets a new level of accessibility for third party
applications to exploit Banyan's enterprise networking products.
Announced at the Association of Banyan Users (ABU) meeting being held in
Montreal, Banyan VINES Version 4.10 integrates comprehensive WindowsTM 3.0
and OS/2TM support, and is offered on the following products:
* Banyan VINES Team (10-user version for 386 platforms)
* Banyan VINES UNLIMITED (formerly VINES for 386 and VINES for 486;
now both in one product)
* Banyan VINES SMP (symmetric multiprocessing)
"The Version 4.10 enhancements underscore our longstanding commitment to
make Banyan VINES the best enterprise networking solution available
today," said James D'Arezzo, Banyan Vice President, Marketing. "Moreover,
we are confident that Version 4.10 and the new Applications Toolkit
afford independent software developers the best suite of tools to create
the powerful VINES-integrated applications needed by users now and in the
future."
Voicing an opinion shared by many other software developers, Larry Moore,
Vice President of the Communications Product Group, Lotus Development
Corporation, said, "We are pleased to announce support for Banyan VINES,
one of the networking solutions most frequently requested by our

customers. We are constantly looking for technology that will support
LotusR Notes' ability to help workgroups be more efficient and effective,
and to allow users to transcend hardware, software, and geographic
diversity. Notes and VINES are an ideal match through their ability to
address enterprise-wide communications across both local and global
networks."
Comprehensive Windows and OS/2 Support
Banyan VINES Version 4.10 adds comprehensive, fully-integrated client and
application support for Microsoft Windows 3.0 and OS/2 (Microsoft and IBM
Standard and IBM Extended Editions) in a VINES environment. This release
expands upon the Windows support offered in Version 4.0 to allow Windows
to work directly with the network, and also incorporates performance and
communications enhancements to DOS support and base VINES.
VINES Version 4.10 is a superset of earlier VINES releases and updates,
retaining all their functionality and ease of use. As a result, users can
run the new 4.10 software release on existing VINES networks without
obsoleting existing applications or network equipment.
Even with the significant enhancements of Version 4.10, Banyan VINES
remains easy to implement across organizations of any size and geographic
distribution. "Banyan VINES has been, and still is, the easiest -- and,
in fact, the only -- enterprise-wide NOS on which to run an entire
business," D'Arezzo said. "It's the easiest to install, manage, control,
use, upgrade, expand, and apply as a development environment."

In large measure, he attributed these characteristics to VINES' blend of
an open UNIX-based architecture, fully-integrated global directory
service, mainframe-like security, and powerful, yet transparent local and
wide area internetwork communications capabilities.
Enhanced Applications Toolkit Plus New DLLs
Make It Easier than Ever to Develop Software for VINES Networks
In conjunction with the announcement of Banyan VINES Version 4.10, the
company also introduced a new version of the VINES Applications Toolkit
that gives developers unprecedented access to VINES when creating
VINES-integrated applications for Windows, OS/2, DOS, and UNIXR
environments. In addition to the robust suite of APIs previously
available in the Version 4.0 Toolkit, the new Toolkit has been enhanced
with two powerful sets of Applications Programming Interfaces (APIs).
One of the new API sets is Mail Client, which helps developers create new
electronic mail applications that can communicate with the Banyan VINES
mail transport mechanism. The Banyan mail environment is built upon and
integrated with StreetTalk -- the first and only fully-integrated global
directory service available today.
The other new API set is VINES Network and System Management (VNSM),
which lets developers create network management clients that are
integrated with VINES' powerful network management capabilities. Such
applications will expand the ability of Banyan VINES users to monitor
their networks and systems.
All VINES-specific APIs are now available as Dynamic Link Libraries
(DLLS) for Windows and OS/2. The new DLLs are a collection of common,

shared program functions that can be referenced simultaneously by the
operating system and by multiple applications. They provide a direct
interface to VINES services so that developers can readily create
distributed OS/2 and Windows applications. DLLs make memory usage more
efficient, reduce application size, and permit easy application upgrades
for future versions of VINES.
Banyan VINES Now Supports OS/2 APIs, too
Also of note, VINES Version 4.10 supports OS/2 APIs. The most popular of
these, Named Pipes, is supported in the Windows, OS/2, and DOS
environments. As a result, Windows and DOS workstations can access an
application server (such as SQL Server) and share the distributed
database with each other and with OS/2 workstations.
